Welcome to my website!
I’m a teacher and historian in New York City.

See excerpts of my January 9, 2023 talk with the Beachcombing Center, about Barren Island, Dead Horse Bay, and Closet Archaeology, here.

Here you can find information about my place-based history projects.

Both with my students and independently, I love teaching and learning about little-known sites and stories, especially here in New York.

Many of us were taught history in dry, dates-and-names fashion.

While I’m a huge advocate for learning some historical facts (and not just Googling everything), I think it’s equally important to immerse ourselves in the history of ordinary people. After all, almost everyone who has ever lived or will ever live on Earth falls into that category! And many “ordinary” people and communities turn out to be quite extraordinary when we learn more about them.

I hope you’ll be inspired by the projects and information on these pages.
